Revenue (Operating Revenue)
Operating revenue (short for “Revenue” in RICDB) is total revenue that a company receives from its normal business activities, usually from the sale of goods and services to customers. The revenue is divided into main business revenue and other business revenue.

Operating Profit, Gross Profit, Net Profit
Gross Profit equals sales revenue minus cost of goods sold (COGS), indicating profitability of main operating items.
Operating Profit is main source of company’s profit. It is profit generated from company’s normal business activities, usually from the sale of goods and services to customers. It equals sales revenue minus period expenses (selling expenses, management expenses, financial expenses, etc.). This is the surplus generated by operations. The main business profit equals to main business revenue minus main business cost and tax & extra charges of main business, which is also known as gross profit. Other business profit equals to other business revenue minus expenses of other businesses.
Net Profit refers to total profit after deducting taxes and is also known as Net Profit after Tax. Equation for net profit: Net profit=Total profit × (1- income tax rate). It is final result of company’s operations. The more net profit indicates a better performance; while less profit indicates poorer performance. It is one of main indicators to measure a company’s performance.
Profit Share
There are indices like profit share by region (segment) in RICDB. Equation for profit share: Gross profit of certain product (segment) / Total gross profit of all products (segments) × 100%.
Profit share of products is based on gross profit in most of companies. If some companies do not release gross profit of each product category and only release operating profit, the profit share is calculated from operating profit.
Gross Margin
Gross margin is gross profit as percentage of revenue. Equation for gross margin: Gross margin=Gross profit / Revenue × 100% = (Revenue – Cost)/ Revenue ×100%.
The gross margin of certain product (or company) generally reflects profitability of this product (or company).
