THE Shanghai Disease Prevention and Control Center will cooperate with the Shanghai Air Duct Cleaners Association to promote regular air duct cleaning at local public venues and then introduce the service to all buildings in the city with central air-conditioners, health officials said yesterday.

The association, which was established late last month, will also work out industry regulations covering technology, staff training, energy conservation, air-conditioner manufacturing and interior air cleansing.

A checkup conducted by the Ministry of Health in 2004 covering 937 public venues in about 60 cities including Shanghai found that only 6.12 percent of the air ducts met national health standards, while 47.11 percent of the ducts were seriously polluted by dust and bacteria.

According to Zhang Shengnian, director of the Shanghai Disease Prevention and Control Center, some 10,000 local buildings, factories and public facilities have central air-conditioners, but most of them have never had the air ducts cleaned.

Officials said air duct needs cleaning every one or two years to prevent the spread of dust and bacteria, which can sicken people with respiratory diseases and other ailments.
