Taiwan-based makers shipped a total of 10.627 million digital cameras in the second quarter of 2007, growing by 19.3% on quarter and by 19.4% on year. Total occupation of the global shipment (production) volume is on the rise from 33.2% estimated for 2006 to 36.1% projected for 2007, and is forecast to further grow to 40.7% and 44.1% in 2008 and 2009, respectively, according to data from Digitimes Research.
The growth in second-quarter shipments was because OEM order volumes from channel clients (such as Jenoptik in Germany and Aigo in China), Kodak, and Casio increased by 1.285 million, 583,000 and 215,000 units, respectively, the data indicated. On-year growth was due to increased orders from Sony and Casio.
In the third quarter, due to increased order volumes, Taiwan-based makers' shipments to Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Kodak will rise by 2.33 million and 460,000 units, respectively, from the second quarter. Additionally, Sanyo Electric, a Japan-based OEM maker of digital cameras, has placed OEM orders with Altek and shipments will begin during the quarter. This is the first time that Sanyo has outsourced production to Taiwan.
The top-four Taiwan-based makers of digital cameras, Premier Image Technology, Altek, Ability Enterprise and Asia Optical, together accounted for 97% of the total shipment volume in second quarter 2007. Of the combined shipment volume, 53.4% was to leading international brands.
The mainstream resolution of Taiwan-made digital cameras is shifting from 7-8 megapixels, currently, to eight or more megapixels.
