While first-tier LCD TV makers Sharp and Samsung Electronics have both said they are planning to head into tenth-generation (10G) LCD production, the other first-tier LCD TV maker, Sony, is taking a different perspective and currently does not have any plans to follow suit, according to Takashi Fukuda, president of TV Business Group of Sony.
While a 10G LCD production line could contribute more 50- and 60-inch panels, most makers will nevertheless remain focused on 40-inch panel production. Although it remains a possibility that large-size LCD TV could become the major trend in the market, the current uncertainties surrounding market demand mean that Sony is not willing to invest in the setup of a 10G line, noted the sources.
With Sony and Samsung taking a different path over their next-generation production Taiwan makers could see a benefit, market sources pointed out. If Taiwan-based panel makers are able to step in to supply all sizes of panels to Sony, Taiwan could have a chance of overtaking Korea in the worldwide supply rankings, they noted said.
