ABOUT 10 percent of food being spot-checked fails to meet national safety standards in Shanghai, although mass food poisoning is at a low level of eight in every 100,000 people, said officials from Shanghai Food and Drug Administration yesterday.
The FDA launched a long-term campaign for food and drug safety yesterday by inspecting local supermarkets and mooncake kitchens.
From now until January 1 next year, officials will strictly supervise and monitor local supermarkets, wet markets, restaurants and pork quality to ensure people's health.
Officials said the city has always frequently monitored food safety, and 95 percent of everyday foods passed quality checks.
For drugs and medical equipment, officials said the city will tighten monitoring on the whole process of drug production, distribution and sales. A network of special inspectors will be established by December, when authorities will remove misleading medical advertisements.
