Toshiba has recently turned to cooperate with Pegatron Technology for its tablet PCs, since it could not reach an agreement with Compal Electronics, according to sources from PC makers.
Toshiba originally planned to partner with Compal to develop two tablet PCs for introduction at the end of 2010 with one model expected to feature Android and Nvidia's Tegra 2 processor and the other Windows CE 7 with a dual-display design, according to previous reports.
With the loss of Toshiba's orders, Compal currently does not have any first-tier PC brands' tablet PC orders on hand and is expected to focus on landing orders from second-tier and regional brand vendors in the short-term. Long-term, the company is expected to strive for large-size model orders from Dell, the sources noted.
Pegatron declined to comment on its orders.
As for other notebook makers, Quanta Computer is currently in partnership with both Acer and Lenovo for tablet PCs. Acer is expected to launch its tablet PCs including a 7-inch Android model using Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor in the fourth quarter.
Lenovo is also working with Wistron on tablet PCs.
Inventec currently is manufacturing tablet PCs for Hewlett-Packard (HP), while Dell's 5-inch Streak (Mini5), which uses Android and a Qualcomm processor, is made by Qisda.
In addition to Toshiba's orders, Pegatron also has tablet PC orders from Asustek Computer which are expected to ship in the third quarter.
