Acer has recently adjusted its ultra-thin notebook strategy and plans to move its ultra-thin notebooks under the Gateway brand, and only the 11.6-inch Aspire Timeline will remain under the Acer brand, according to sources from notebook players.
After Acer finishes digesting its 13- to 15-inch ultra-thin notebook inventory, upcoming 13- to 15-inch ultra-thin notebooks will all be branded under Gateway. Acer will continue to push its 11.6-inch Aspire ultra-thin model and TimelineX series that features a standard notebook platform in the future. Gateway will initially launch a 13.3-inch ultra-thin model and may launch a 14-inch model at a later time.
As for Intel's recently launched Core i7-660UM, Core i5-430UM and 540UM, and Core i3-330UM ultra-low-voltage processors, Acer is already planning to launch ultra-thin devices featuring these CPUs in near future, the sources noted.
The sources pointed out that Acer plans to push ultra-thin notebooks into niche markets and will continue to improve thickness as well as power longevity.
Acer has also recently shifted all its 11.6-inch ultra-thin model orders from Quanta Computer and 13.3-inch model orders from Inventec to Wistron, but since the model's share in the overall notebook market is only about 10%, the makers are unlikely to be impacted significantly, the sources added.
