Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) has denied that it will produce IPS and FFS panels for Hydis. However, due to the market potential of the two types of panels in the tablet PC segment, CPT has internally tried out the production of IPS and FFS panels and will begin volume production after receiving orders as well as licenses, according company president Lin Sheng-chang.

As smartphones and tablet PCs have nearly all chosen IPS or FFS panels, it is a must for CPT to venture into the segment, Lin stated, noting that CPT will start soliciting orders and discussing licensing agreements when its related technologies are ready.

With the production of IPS and FFS panels at Hydis likely to fall short of demand, industry watchers have speculated that Hydis may outsource production to CPT.

Hydis already licensed its FFS technology to LG Display, Hitachi and Sony, and is still discussing licensing agreements with a number of panel makers, the sources added.
