Solar cell prices will not come down substantially for the rest of 2010, according to Simon Tsuo, chairman of solar cell maker Motech Industries. He further pointed out that demand for 2011 is unlikely to grow at the same pace as supply, which should increase competition in cost and pricing. Motech will continue to focus on vertical integration and increase capacity in polycrystalline silicon and solar wafer.

Tsuo indicated that he is still evaluating the market for 2011 and it is difficult to predict the amount of growth at the moment. If the market rises by 40% as some companies are forecasting, shortages of polycrystalline silicon and solar wafers will likely persist. However, if the market underperforms, even upstream prices will decline, and demand will be determine by pricing in 2011, Tsuo said.

Motech posted an EPS of NT$5 for the third quarter on successful vertical integration and improvements in solar cell conversion rate, Tsuo said, adding that vertical integration will be the company's focus for next year. The company aims to increase its solar wafer capacity to account for half of its solar cell production needs.
