NEC has been helping Tatung InfoComm with its WiMAX operation, and will continue its support for WiMAX development in Taiwan, including additional investment in line with Taiwan government's policies, according to NEC China president Masaki Kidowaki.
NEC and Tatung InfoComm cooperated to set up an experimental mobile WiMAX network in 2007 and a WiMAX R&D center in 2008 in Taiwan, and they completed commercial WiMAX networks in southern and eastern Taiwan in March 2010, according to WiMAX industry sources in Taiwan.
NEC is a major supplier of WiMAX base station equipment for UQ Communications, the only operator of mobile WiMAX services in Japan, the sources said, adding Japan-based mobile telecom carrier KDDI and Intel Capital are shareholders of UQ Communications.
