Although the price of the Blu-ray disc (BD) drives has already dropped from US$100 to about US$70-80, market penetration of BD drives in 2010 is unlikely to see strong growth compared to 2009 as the economic downturn in the US and Europe caused notebook brands to delay their adoption of BD drives as a standard specification.
Taiwan's two largest optical disc drive makers, Lite-On IT and Quanta Storage, will only ship 1.17 million BD drives in 2010, accounting for 1.5% of their total optical disc drive shipments, up slightly from 1% in 2009, according to Digitimes Research.
