Mobile telecom carrier Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) plans to complete a Wi-Fi network of 25,000 hot spots around Taiwan in 2011 mainly for promoting 3G business, according to the company.
The Wi-Fi network will consist of 15,000 hot spots to be deployed by Qware Communications of which FET is a 51%-stakeholder as well as 10,000 to be set up by itself, FET pointed out. Qware operates WiFly, a citywide WLAN network in Taipei City, under a BOT (build-operate-transfer) contract with the city government, FET indicated.
FET, the only Taiwan member of the Conexus Mobile Alliance, will discuss with three to four members in Southeast Asia at the alliance meeting next week about cooperation to provide Wi-Fi roaming services and FET's online Chinese-language e-book store in the regional market, FET pointed out.
FET plans to procure 1.3-1.4 million handsets, 50,000 netbooks and 70,000 tablet PCs in 2011 for contract-bundled sale, the company indicated.
