Taiwan-based glass lens maker Kinko Optical, benefiting from increasing Canon DSLR camera orders, is expected to see its glass lens shipments in 2011 increasing 16.45% on year to 184 million units, while Kinko's upstream optical glass blanks supplier Unique Optical Industrial benefiting by orders from both Canon and Nikon, currently has 35-40% of its optical glass blanks capacity are used for DSLR and the company is set to gradually complete its equipment upgrading processes to satisfy the demand for optical glass blanks.
Kinko shipped about 158 million glass lenses in 2010 with the monthly average being 13.21 million units. Canon is currently the largest client of Kinko and had contributed about 16% of the Kinko's revenues in 2010. With the company's shipment increase in 2011, the revenue proportion is expected to rise significantly to 25%.
Canon produced about 4.1 million interchangeable lenses in 2010 and the volume is expected to increase to 7.12 million units in 2011, 9.5 million units in 2012.
Unique currently is capable to produce a maximum of 20 million optical glass blanks each month and Kinko is currently contributing about 20% of Unique's revenues. Since DSLR camera shipments are growing quickly, Unique's optical glass blanks used for DSLR camera is expected to surpass 50% of the total capacity as soon as 2011.
