Acer shipped 9.775 million PC products in the fourth quarter of 2010, down 17% on quarter and 15% on year due to a slowdown in netbook shipments, according to IDC. As a result, Acer's ranking in the global PC market retreated to third place, trailing HP and Dell.

HP's fourth-quarter PC shipments reached 17.95 million units, down 0.9% on year. Dell fourth-quarter shipments were 11.14 million units and Lenovo's increased 21.1% to 9.55 million units, IDC said.

Global PC shipments grew 2.7% on year in the fourth quarter of 2010, IDC added.

Acer has said that it won't be able to reach its earlier projection for a sequential 5-10% growth in consolidated revenues for the fourth quarter as its PC sales in a number markets in Europe were affected by snow storms.

Acer has also reiterated that it will not give up netbook sales at the moment and will launch tablet PCs in the second quarter.

However, Gartner data showed that Acer still held its number two PC ranking with fourth-quarter shipments totaling 11.85 million units, trailing HP's 17.58 million units. Dell followed with shipments of 10.8 million units and Lenovo with 9.48 million units.
