Handset display shipments increased 6% sequentially to 413.2 million units in the third quarter of 2010, while its revenues grew even faster at 13% sequentially to US$3.38 billion for the quarter, according to DisplaySearch. This was the third consecutive quarters that revenue growth outpaced shipment growth.

"In the third quarter, we saw critical changes in key specifications of handset displays, such as size and technology. This influenced the ASP for handset displays, which was US$8.19 in the third quarter of 2010, up 4% on year and 6% sequentially. Despite this, ASPs for each size or specification continued to fall as usual," noted Calvin Hsieh, senior analyst at DisplaySearch. "Increased demand for upgraded specifications (such as display size, technology, and resolution), and a shift in display technologies used in mobile phones compensated for falling ASPs - resulting in strong revenue growth."

Demand for higher resolution displays (320x480/HVGA or higher) reached 22.5% in the third quarter of 2010. In particular, the share of WVGA (400x800 and 400x864) resolution increased to 8%, compared to 3.5% in the first quarter of 2010 and 5.3% in the second quarter. DVGA (640x960) resolution displays, such as Apple's retina display, also grew, to 3.2% from 1.9% in the second quarter of 2010.

Samsung and Nokia have been increasing the use of AMOLED displays in their handsets. As a result, the third quarter of 2010 shipments reached 13.5 million, up 132% on year and 65% sequentially. For the first time, AMOLED revenue share passed 10% (10.7%, up from 6.4% in the second quarter of 2010). AMOLED displays have been particularly successful in smartphones. For example, 4-inch, 480x800 resolution displays, which accounted for 81% or 11 million units of AMOLED shipments, were used in Samsung's Galaxy S i9000. Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) had 98.3% share of AMOLED panels in handsets in the third quarter of 2010.

While AMOLED and LTPS TFT-LCD are increasing their share of the handset display market, increased demand for larger sizes and higher resolutions has allowed mainstream a-Si TFT-LCD to maintain a 60% share of handset display shipments, followed by LTPS TFT-LCD, which increased its share to 22.5%.
