Spot pricing for 6-inch solar wafers is approaching US$3.80/unit in March 2011, which could inflict more cost pressure on solar cell makers. For cell manufacturers with less leverage in material procurement and lower capacity, current quotes of US$1.25/W are not sufficient to accommodate US$3.80 wafer prices.
Neo Solar pointed out that US$3.80 is seen only in some transactions, it is not the market average. The company did not reveal its wafer procurement prices, but indicated that contract and spot transactions represent 70% and 30% of material procurement.
