Corning Display Technologies Taiwan (CDTT) president Alan Eusden has indicated that glass substrate demand growth for the mobile PC segment will reach 18% in 2010-2014, exceeding the demand growth for LCD TV, at 11%.
Global glass substrate demand is expected to reach 3.6-3.8 billion square feet in 2011, Eusden noted, adding that demand for LCD TV glass substrates will increase by 17% with demand mainly coming from emerging markets. Glass substrates for PCs are expected to increase 27%. With demand and supply reaching balance, ASP declines for glass substrates are expected to slow down. Furthermore, with tablet PCs gaining popularity and LCD TV designs getting thinner, demand for thin glass substrates such as Eagle XG Slim is expected to increase.
LCD TV still accounts for the largest proportion of global glass substrate demand and glass substrate demand for LCD TVs is expected to reach 2.8-3.3 billion square feet in 2014, significantly exceeding the demand of 700-8,500 million square feet for LCD monitors and 650-750 million square feet for mobile PCs, Eusden added.
Eusden said that the main reason for LCD display market to continue to grow is the increasing demand for handheld mobile devices, improving consumption in emerging markets and driving popularity and fast expanding penetration rates for LCD TV.
