The earthquake on March 11 has affected the manufacturing operations of Japan-based Sony and Seiko Epson. Sony indicated that it has halted production in six plants, and the SCID facility in Tagajo sustained especially severe damage. Four of Epson's plants are impacted by the earthquake, but shipments to Taiwan will not be disrupted.

Epson has established a disaster task force to confirm the safety of its employees and execute the necessary steps to contain damages to company facilities. Epson's 50 manufacturing plants are spread out globally, and hence only four facilities have been disrupted, which includes Epson Toyocom and Epson Atmix. Plant operations mostly suffer from power shortage and minor structural damage.

Epson indicated that orders from Taiwan-based clients are produced in Southeast Asia, and hence shipments to Taiwan will not be affected. The company has announced a donation of JPY100 million for disaster relief.

Sony noted that four out of the six plants that have stopped production are based in the Miyagi prefecture, and the other two in Fukushima.

Due to the power shortage, Sony has not been able to calculate total losses. The company has since begun partial operation in five of the plants but has no detail schedule for full operation. Sony has donated JPY300 million.
