Taiwan-based manufacturers are now concerned that upstream materials from Japan could be contaminated by radiation from the nuclear power plant accident. Industry Technology Research Institute (ITRI) indicated that since most of the electronics manufacturers produce in clean rooms, it will be difficult for radiation particles to enter their production lines.
Additionally, Taiwan's manufacturers also have stringent testing process, ITRI said, adding that electronic products, just like human beings, can be decontaminated using cleaning process to be rid of the radiation particles. Taiwan manufacturers rely on Japan for many key materials.
Taiwan-based manufacturers should not be too worried, said ITRI. From Japan to Taiwan, materials will have to go through several check points for radiation contamination. Moreover, radiation weakens over time and distance, and therefore, impact on electronic product production should be minimal.
