Supply of Sony's Blu-ray drive pick-up heads is facing danger of seeing shortages as the plants of Sony Shiraishi Semiconductor, a Blu-ray drive pick-up head manufacturing subsidiary of Sony, in Fukushima, Japan, are still out of operation due to the earthquake and the component shortages may cause Sony to face supply issues for its PlayStation 3.
Meanwhile, Nintendo, which recently launched its 3DS handheld, saw monthly sales in Japan drop from 200,000 units originally to less than half.
Although both Sony and Nintendo are set to win back market share that was taken by Microsoft's Kinect, in 2011, the earthquake in Japan may seriously delay the two players' plans.
