Optical disc drive (ODD) shipments, originally expected to be strongly impacted by the growing popularity of tablet PCs, will manage to meet makers' expectations in the second quarter of 2011, according to industry sources. Neither do ODD makers expect tablet PCs to affect their orders in the second half of 2011.

The sources believe that iPad-like tablet PC's limited shipment growth in the future because of iPad 2 will be the key to maintaining ODD shipments.

As the first quarter is the traditional weak season, global ODD shipments in the quarter of 2011 are expected to be lslightly lower than expected, but will rebound in the second quarter and peak in the third quarter, the sources noted.
