While Acer has downward adjusted its target PC revenues for the first quarter of 2011 and forecast no sequential growth in second-quarter notebook shipments, Acer's two main ODMs, Compal Electronics and Wistron, are expected to see on-quarter growth in notebook shipments in the second quarter, according to industry sources.

Acer's pessimistic outlook was individual rather than the general situation, the sources analyzed. This is because netbook and consumer notebooks account for a relatively large portion of Acer's total notebook shipments and such models face more competitive impact from tablet PCs, the sources said. In addition, Samsung Electronics has brought increasing competition to bear in Europe launching smartphones, tablets and notebook, the sources indicated.

Although notebook shipments to Acer in the second quarter will remain flat sequentially, Compal will see increased shipments to Lenovo, Dell, Toshiba and other main vendors based on received ODM orders, the sources noted. In particular, Lenovo is expected to take increasing deliveries to meet the Labor Day peak sales period in the China market in early May, the sources noted, adding Wistron is the same situation, as its ODM clients include Lenovo, Dell and Sony.
