Commenting about the tablet PC market, Acer Taiwan president Scott Lin pointed out that the company is currently working aggressively over its tablet PCs and is doing a marvelous job; however, Japan's earthquake may affect component supplies for its smartphone and tablet PC lines.

Lin pointed out that Acer's current strategy is to focus on maintaining its notebook shipments; therefore, its smartphone and tablet PC shipments may be affected by the component shortages; however, the actual impact will still need some time to accurately estimate.

Lin believes that the war of tablet PCs has just begun and after Google Android-based devices start entering the market, Apple will no longer be able to dominate the whole market.

Lin noted that Acer surveys have shown that most consumers believe a tablet PC is like a PC device, meaning it needs an open environment; therefore, Acer has chosen Android that supports Flash and USB to allow consumers to have a more complete Internet browsing experience.

As for market watchers' concerns that Acer may not be able to achieve its tablet PC shipment goal of 5-7 million units, Lin pointed out that the company sold about 1,000 units in the past week and a Taiwan-based telecom carrier placed orders for 4,000 units this week, and is currently still receiving orders from both Internet and retail channels; therefore he is optimistic about sales.
