Vendors of non-iPad tablet PCs are faced with a challenge from high costs of touch panels, according to industry sources in Taiwan.
These vendors have to set tablet PC prices comparable with iPad's in order to be competitive. However, a 10.1-inch complete touch panel costs US$90-100, consisting of US$37-38 for a 1,024 x 600 panel, US$38-40 for a touch module and cover glass as well as bonding and processing costs.
In order to minimize touch panel costs, these vendors are considering adopting less expensive solutions, including touch on lens and in-cell solutions, the sources said.
