AMOLED has been seen as the future for panels displays. South-Korea based firms LG Display and SMD have been setting up AMOLED production lines aggressively. US- and Japan-based firms also have been aiming to develop technology for AMOLED panels.

The rise of smartphones and tablet PCs have been causing demand for AMOLED panels to increase. AMOLED TV is also expected to be the next step for the TV industry. South-Korea based AMOLED firm SMD's GEN 5.5 facility will begin productions in June. In addition to expanding production lines, SMD has been accumulating patents and AMOLED-related technologies and plans to begin production of AMOLED TV panels in 2013.

LG Display also has been producing AMOLED panels since first quarter 2011. The main target market is smartphones.
