With Hewlett-Packard (HP) recently announcing a recall to some notebook batteries due to overheating and being a fire hazard, Taiwan-based notebook battery makers pointed out that the issues are mainly related to battery cells and since they are only responsible for designing and packaging the battery, they will not see much impact from the incident.
However, the incident will create some distrust between the notebook brand with its Korea-based battery cell suppliers that they will need to negotiate, but this will not affect Taiwan battery makers' shipments.
As for concerns that notebook brand vendors have been issuing battery recall because of overheat almost every year, the sources pointed out that the products were all produced within 2007-2008; therefore the defective products could be a result of a battery shortage or technology issues, which led vendors to adopt poor quality battery cells into their notebook batteries. However, since the company's supply sources are becoming stable, while the related technologies have been improving, such incidents should not occur frequently.
