Winbond Electronics has announced that revenues for May 2011 grew 1.5% sequentially to NT$2.57 billion (US$89 million) while fellow NOR flash manufacturer Macronix International saw May revenues decrease 1.5% on month to NT$2.12 billion.
On an annual basis, Winbond and Macronix had revenue declines of 10.4% and 13.5%, respectively, compared to May 2010.
Including sales generated by logic IC subsidiary Nuvoton Technology, Winbond's consolidated revenues increased 2.1% sequentially to NT$3.32 billion in May. The figure was 9.5% lower than the NT$3.66 billion posted in May 2010.
Winbond reiterated that the company is set to transition its NOR production process to 58nm in the second half of 2011. It has entered volume production for new products including 1.8V serial flash and 3V parallel flash devices in the second quarter.
Winbond also manufactures niche-market DRAM chips including specialty DRAM (SDRAM) and mobile RAM. The company plans to migrate to a 46nm process for SDRAM production in the second half of 2011, and is improving its product mix to create better profitability. As for mobile RAM, Winbond expects sales generated from the business to grow from the bottom seen in the first quarter.
Macronix's May revenues were in line with seasonal effects. Accumulated revenues for the first five months of 2011 totaled NT$10.84 billion, down 4.2% from a year earlier.
Macronix is migrating to a 75nm process for mid-range to high-end flash production. The company estimated revenues at NT$6.4-6.8 billion in the ongoing second quarter, with NOR flash sales growing faster than those of ROM.
