Coco Cola denies reports that safety problems of one of its drinks were causes leading to death of a 10-year-old boy in eastern China Monday.

The product has been removed from sale in Changchuan after police in the city found highly toxic pesticide in the remaining contents of a bottle of strawberry-flavored Minute Maid Puply Super Milky. The boy’s mother, surnamed Liu, is still in coma in hospital.

The company had “carried out reviews of the retention samples of the same production batches, but hadn’t found anything unusual,” Coca-Cola Changchun Co. said in a statement yesterday.

“All the products are safe and within standards,” it added.

A police investigation is ongoing and officers say it is too early to tell whether the contamination was caused by someone putting pesticide into the bottle or whether it had been introduced during the production process.
