According to the statistics of the National Bureau of Statistics, China's output of synthetic rubber (including reclaimed rubber) in 2007 reached 2.22 million tons, up 20% year on year. China's styrene butadiene rubber output in the year reached 720,000 tons, up 23.7% compared to the previous year, boosted by the factor that Shanghai Gaoqiao Petrochemical Co., Ltd. brought its synthetic rubber plant with a production capacity of 100,000 tons into production in the third quarter of 2006 and Yangjin Rubber Co., Ltd. brought its synthetic rubber plant into operation in May of 2007. China's output of cis-1,4-polybutadiene rubber was 460,000 tons in 2007, up 2.9% year on year, due to the impact of successive maintenance of several rubber units in the Yanshan Petrochemical Co., Ltd, the Gaoqiao Petrochemical Co., Ltd and the Daqing Petrochemical Co., Ltd.

In 2007, China' imported 1.33 million tons of synthetic rubber, up 9% year on year. Among which, nearly 220,000 tons went to cis-1,4-polybutadiene rubber, a jump of 43% year on year and around 260,000 tons was for styrene butadiene rubber, up 1% year on year. China's import of SBS dropped 10% year on year to 240,000 tons in the year, due mainly to the slack demand of shoes-making industry.

Although some of China's medium- and small-sized rubber producers are faced with the risk of bankruptcy, due to high cost in the industry and policy impact, including reduction of export rebate rate, China's synthetic rubber industry on the whole maintains a good momentum of growth. According to the statistics of the National Bureau of Statistics, China's tire output in 2007 reached 556.49 million units, up 23% year on year, of which 250 million units were meridian, up 33% year on year. China's output of rubber overshoes in the year was 1.95 billion pairs, up 18% year on year. Because of the development of downstream sectors, such as automobile, highway construction and road transportation, it is estimated that China's demand for synthetic rubber will continue to grow, but the growth rate will slow down.
