AU Optronics (AUO) has decided to begin volume production of FED (field emission display) panels as soon as the fourth quarter of 2011, according to a Japan-based Nikkei report.

AUO will initially produce 20-, 26- and 32-inch FED panels for broadcast and medical purposes mainly, with a monthly total output of 10,000 units, the report indicated.

In response, AUO indicated that FEDs are still undergoing R&D and it has not yet made volume production plans.
