Hot-selling fast noodle helps sell China's wheat

   Date:2006/12/31

Instant noodles used one tenth of China's wheat crop last year and had sales of 29.8 billion yuan (3.7 billion U.S. dollars).

China produced 46 billion packages of instant noodle last year, making China the number one maker of the cheap fast food, said Pan Beilei, vice president of the China National Light Industry Federation, at the China Conference on Wheat Products.

At the conference 11 fast noodle makers signed cooperation agreements with nine institutes of higher learning to jointly develop more nutritious better quality instant noodle products.

Meng Suhe, secretary general of the China Association of Food Science and Technology, said that the quality of China-made instant noodle meets international food safety standards. The key to the development trend of the fast food industry lies in improving the seasoning ingredients and diversifying product mix.

Meng said that fast food makers are developing more seasonings based on Chinese traditional dishes. The industry needs more research and development backup from research institutes.
