Darjeeling tea launched in China

   Date:2006/12/31

An Indian tea company has taken up the challenge to convert green tea-loving Chinese people to change their habit to sipping India's finest black tea from Darjeeling.

"We will take it as a challenge to introduce black tea in China, knowing fully well that Chinese people are used to green tea only," CEO of Siliguri-based Lochan Tea Ltd, Rajiv Lochan said.

"We will sell high-quality tea to the Chinese consumers and try and wean them to India's famous Darjeeling tea varieties," he said.

Lochan Tea has entered into a marketing arrangement with Beijing Dongli Garden International Trade Co. Ltd, he said.

"The launch of Darjeeling tea in China is like a dream come true for me," Lochan said excitedly.

"My dream is to provide a cup of Darjeeling tea daily to 1.3 billion Chinese people," he said, hoping that the huge Chinese market would be a major market for Indian teas.

"I hope we won't have to sell tea to Westerners once the Chinese black tea market develops," Lochan, also secretary of Tea Traders Association in Silguri said.

General Manager of Beijing Dongli Garden International Trade Co. Ltd., Xiao Juan said India's Darjeeling tea has good prospects in China.
