Fruit imported for festival

   Date:2006/12/31

About 200 tons of fruit will be imported to the city for the coming Mid-Autumn Festival.

About 100 tons of fruit are already on the way to Shanghai and should arrive in the city this week.

The shipment includes 10 types of fruit, including pitaya, lemon and Hami melon, which the central government approved imports of in April. "

The price of Taiwan fruit is expected to drop by 10 to 20 percent this year from last year's Mid-Autumn Festival, Lien said.

Prices would be even lower if fruit could be shipped directly from the island to Shanghai.

"Taiwan goods arrive in the mainland only after being shipped to a third place. It not only adds to the cost but also affects the fruit quality since the shelf life for fruit is short," said Gu Honghui, deputy director of the Shanghai Taiwan Affairs Office.

So far, the central government has approved the import of 22 species of fruit from Taiwan Province.
