Some Japanese food to China unsafe

   Date:2006/12/31
China has found nearly 30 batches of imported Japanese food containing excessive materials that are harmful to human's health since June, said the General Administration of Quality Supervision.

The administration has urged Japanese authorities to strengthen the supervision of foods exported to China. The administration also ordered the local quarantine bureau to improve the analysis of Japanese food.

The quality authority in Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, found that a kind of fish sausage from a Japanese company, whose Chinese name is pronounced "Yuanda," contains 1.3g of sorbic acid per kilogram, 17.3 times the standard. Salted radishes were also found to contain excessive sorbic acid.

Sorbic acid is a preservative that can be harmful to people's liver and kidney functions if they consume too much.

Shandong's provincial authority on August 4 found a Japanese saury containing listeria monocytogenes, which can cause blood poisoning and cerebrospinal meningitis.

Tianjin quality supervision and quarantine bureau has found excessive bacteria existing in a kind of Japanese coffee, the notice said.

Excessive aluminum, sulfur dioxide and cadmium were also found in several different batches of Japanese food imports.
