UB sets sights on China shores

Making a foray into the China spirits market, UB Spirits Company is shortly setting up a marketing office in Shanghai.

UB Group Chairman Vijay Mallya said the company would soon appoint an executive to head the Chinese operations.

"Initially we would market our liquor products in China. There is enough space for our brands in the market," He observed. United Breweries, he said, would invest Rs 400 crore to expand brewing capacity across the country in next three years. 

United Breweries would also launch Kingfisher Wine within the next six months, Mr Mallya said noting that beer and wine would gel well and all efforts would be made to encash on the super brand equity of Kingfisher.

UB would also be soon launching a premium beer brand UB Ultra to take on the competition from multinational beer brands such as Foster. Earlier, addressing the 7th Annual General Meeting of United Breweries Limited, Mr Mallya said, the company will review the multiple stock exchange listings.

Mr Mallya said UB would welcome on board Biocon Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw when she is completes the stipulated three-year moratorium she has imposed on herself not to take up directorship, as a commitment to the Biocon Board.

"She is in the lock-in period. Nothing will delight me more than having Kiran on our board", Mr Mallya observed.
