Carrefour stops Sushi sales in China after contamination

   Date:2006/12/31
French supermarket chain Carrefour has suspended sales of sushi in China following a bacteria outbreak in two of its stores.

Sales were stopped after Chinese food safety inspectors in the eastern province of Zhejiang found bacteria levels were 23 times the accepted standard in one type of sushi in a store in the city of Hangzhou.

High levels of bacteria were also detected in sushi in the Carrefour outlet in the southern city of Guangzhou.

Carrefour said it was examining raw material, questioning suppliers and checking the cooking process and equipment used in sushi preparation.

Sushi sales were not expected to resume in the short term.
