Online market operator EBay Inc. (EBAY) is evaluating acquisition targets in China and Japan for possible business expansion in areas such as mobiles, logistics and shipping in the booming Asia, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Jay Lee (Li Jie), Ebay’s Asia-Pacific managing director was quoted telling Down Jones Wires recently that Asia is expected to be the fastest-growing region for the company in the next five years.
As much as one third of the company’s overall sales will come from this region, Jay Lee said, without giving the current proportion or a time frame for the projection.
He also said that the company is currently in talks with some potential acquisition targets in Asia, but he declined to disclose more details.
The company’s last Asia acquisition deal came in 2009, when the company purchased South Korea’s Gmarket.
Ebay, who has a 15,000-team globally, is also considering growing its employees in Asia, Jay Lee said.
Sales in Asia’s exporters have been growing at annualized 26 percent, he said. Meanwhile, 71 percent of sales by big sellers in the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong come from eBay.
