Fast-food drive-through signals changing market

   Date:2006/12/31

Burger chain McDonald's China opened another drive-through restaurant last week, in Tianjin, in north China.

It is the sixth McDonald's drive-through to open on the Chinese mainland.

The new 170-seat restaurant indicates the company's confidence in economic development and business opportunities in China.

McDonald's now boasts more than 31,000 restaurants that serve nearly 50 million customers in more than 100 countries and regions.

Although drive-through fast-food restaurants are still rare in China, the development of such services has been seen as a response to the changing lifestyles of Chinese consumers.

As average income rises, more families can afford to eat at Western-style fast-food outlets.

Since its mainland debut in Shenzhen in 1990, McDonald's has opened more than 760 restaurants across the country, employing more than 50,000 staff. The fast-food giant opened its first drive-through in Dongguan City, in southern Guangdong Province, last year. The other four drive-throughs are located in Shanghai, Shunde City of Guangdong, Zhoushan city of east China's Zhejiang Province and Haikou, capital of southern Hainan Province.
