MediaTek August sales likely to grow over 10% sequentially

   Date:2011/09/02

MediaTek's consolidated revenues will likely rebound to over NT$8 billion (US$276 million) in August, up more than 10% on month, according to market watchers. The fabless IC firm is expected to see its third-quarter sales reach the higher end of its NT$22-23 billion guidance range, said the watchers.

The watchers credited their bullish outlook to a pick-up in orders for the company's handset solutions. MediaTek has seen shipments of its handset ICs climb 10-15% sequentially in August, buoyed by a warming-up of demand for its mature 2.5G and 2.75G solutions and increased orders placed by China-based clients for its MT6573 smartphone chip, the watchers pointed out.

MediaTek has not given a sales estimate for August, but guided for a 5-10% growth sequentially in the third quarter.

Fellow fabless IC firm MStar Semiconductor has also seen its monthly shipments of handset-use chips expand to more than five million units from two million in the first half of 2011, according to the watchers. MStar's 8535N-series mobile phone chipset for GSM/GPRS/EDGE focused on China and other emerging markets has been the main shipment growth driver, the watchers added.

MStar's revenues are likely to rise 5-10% sequentially in August, and sales for the third quarter are expected to meet the company's guidance of NT$8.8-9.2 billion, the watchers said.
