Seoul bourse may mull opening after-hour KTB futures: bourse official

SEOUL, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Korea Exchange (KRX), Seoul bourse operator, may mull opening an after-hour market for South Korea's government bonds from a long-term perspective, a senior bourse official said Monday.

"From a long-term perspective, KRX may consider opening an after-hour market for Korea Treasury Bond (KTB) futures by tying with overseas bourse operators," Kim Jin-gyu, a chief operating officer (COO) in charge of derivatives market at Korea Exchange, said at a conference held in central Seoul.

Kim, however, said KRX is not considering opening such a market right now even though futures contracts for three-year government bonds have recently traded actively.

The official noted after-hour KTB futures will be established after opening an after-hour market for currency futures, adding the KRX is now working on the possibility for listing currency futures in overseas exchanges.

The KRX has listed KOSPI200 futures on CME Globex platform in 2009 and daily futures of KOSPI200 options on Eurex in 2010 in a bid to make available KOSPI200 derivatives for trading after the regular session of the KRX is closed.

The trading volume of daily futures listed on Eurex has grown steadily just one year after its introduction. The highest trading volume of 200,000 contracts was observed in August.
