Whitbread takes Costa Coffee to China

   Date:2006/12/31

Whitbread is to launch its Costa Coffee chain in China.

The first Costa store is scheduled to open in Shanghai early next year and Whitbread aims to have 300 stores throughout China over the next few years.

Chief executive Alan Parker said: "China is a very attractive market, making this a major deal for Costa.

"There is an established coffee culture and increasing interest in drinking coffee out of the home so there is consumer demand for the product."

He said that the firm would be exporting its "unique coffee product and 35 years of Italian coffee heritage to China".
