Nikkei drops 1.14 pct to fresh low

TOKYO, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed sharply lower Wednesday, with the key Nikkei stock index down 1.14 percent.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 Average lost 97.98 points from Tuesday to 8,518.57, marking a fresh closing low since April 28, 2009. The broader Topix index was down 8.13 points, or 1.08 percent, at 741.69.

The sectors leading the decliners included the consumer finance sector the nonferrous and textiles sectors. The rubber products, the fishery and forestry, and the electricity and gas sectors were among the winners.

The turnover was about 1,118 billion yen (about 14.55 billion U. S. dollars).
