Up to 80% of LCD monitors sold in the Taiwan market will be LED-backlit models in fourth-quarter 2011, climbing from 70% in the third quarter, according to industry sources. Global penetration of LED-backlit models is expected to reach 50% by the end of the year, up from around 30-40% in the third quarter, they said.

Sales of LCD monitors in the Taiwan market may reach only 1.4 million units in 2011, down from the previously expected 1.6-1.8 million units, they said.

Asustek Computer remained the top vendor in Taiwan's LCD monitor market in September. The company expects its monitors to account for 25-30% of Taiwan's market from January-September. Asustek has been the top LCD monitor brand in Taiwan since fourth-quarter 2008, the sources noted.

ViewSonic and Chimei each took 15% of Taiwan's LCD monitor market in September, while Acer and TPV Technology each had 11%, sources said.

Globalwise, 24- and 27-inch LCD monitors in the US and China, 19-inch sets in Germany, 23-inch models in UK, and 20-inch monitors in Japan have all seen prices rise in October after vendors cut product prices in September to stimulate back-to-school demand, the sources said.

Average price of 20-inch monitors in Japan is being lifted in October, compared with September, due to LG Electronics' release of glass-free 3D LED monitors in Japan, they said.

Total shipments of the world's LCD monitors in 2011 are expected to reach 168 million units, sources said.
