Poll finds most New Yorkers favor millionaire's tax

   Date:2011/10/18

NEW YORK, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- A Siena College Research Institute poll released on Monday found that 72 percent of New York voters support a tax on millionaires.

Around 83 percent of Democrats and 55 percent of Republicans favor taxing wealthy people with an annual earning of 1 million U. S. dollars, according to the poll, which surveyed 800 registered New York voters by telephone from Oct. 10-12.

The poll also found that 51 percent New York voters preferred cutting spending rather than raising revenue to close a 2-billion- U.S.-dollar budget deficit estimated for the next fiscal year.

The poll was released days after "Occupy Wall Street" protesters marched to the homes of New York City's richest residents to protest economic inequality, calling for the extension of the millionaire's tax, which will expire in December.

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, however, didn't support the millionaire's tax, saying the tax will make the state uncompetitive.
