China seen as future logistics market

Small and medium industries (SMIs) in southern Johor were encouraged to relocate their logistics support to Port Tanjung Pelepas (PTP).

Johor State Executive Councillor Tan Kok Hong said many SMIs in southern Johor were still looking towards Singapore, Port Klang and Pasir Gudang to export their products overseas.

Tan, who is also chairman of the state committee for international trade and industries, energy, water and telecommunications, said he was told by some SMIs who had relocated to PTP from Singapore that they could save up to US200 dollar per trip.

He said the world's largest container ship, Emma Maersk, docked last week at PTP and the port was on target to achieve four million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containerised cargo by the end of this year, making it the busiest port in Malaysia.

Tan also encouraged the SMIs to look towards China as their future market. "The Malaysian economy is just too small and the Chinese market is much larger. If we can be successful here, there are no reasons for us not to be successful there," he said.
