DRAM spot price jumps 20%, says inSpectrum

   Date:2011/12/19

Spot price for mainstream DRAM products saw a significant and surprising jump last week (December 12-16), according to inSpectrum. As of noon of December 16, spot price of a white-branded 2Gb DDR2 rocketed 20% to US$0.79 and a branded 2Gb DDR3 also reached US$0.89 rising by 16%.

It was rare for the DRAM spot market to see such sudden and strong price rise within a week. Some local traders even commented that it was not a healthy rebound and it might not last long. An oversupply of around 15% is still plaguing the market, the traders noted.

Although the strong reverse was unusual, the upward pricing trend was not surprising, inSpectrum indicated, adding that the overall spot price of DRAM is expected to rise further prior to the Chinese New Year holidays, which arrive in mid January.

The NAND flash spot market remained quiet this week with demand continuing to be weak and the overall pricing staying flat, according to inSepctrum. As of noon of December 16, spot prices of 32Gb MLC and 64MLC were pegged at US$3.23 and US$5.88, respectively.
