   Date:2006/12/31

China's chemical drug industry profits are growing at the rate of 4.6 percent, which is far below the rate of all other Chinese industries, according to figures from the National Bureau of Statistics.

The 4.6 percent profit growth is quite low compared to the growth rate of 29.6 percent by all other Chinese industries such as metals and energy, in the first nine months of the year.

From January to September, the sales of China's chemical drug industry grew 15.2 percent compared to the same period in 2005, while national industries' sales grew by 26.3 percent.

The statistics also showed that 30.8 percent of companies from the chemical drug sector suffered losses, which is 11 percentage points higher than the national average.

Figures from the China Association of Chemical Drugs showed that of 147 chemical drug manufacturer members, 32 companies made a loss in the first nine months. The combined losses reached RMB48 million ($6 million), up 16.8 percent from the same period last year.
