Gasgoo.com (Shanghai March 6) - Nissan's upcoming project to manufacture electric vehicles in China is very likely to be located in Guangdong's capital of Guangzhou. A story appearing on nddaily.com cites a recent report issued by the Guangzhou Municipal Development and Reform Commission. In the report, the GDRC confirms that it will be investing 5.45 billion yuan ($868.75m) this year in eight important infrastructure projects aimed at increasing the automobile and engine production capacity of key manufacturers, such as GAC Motor, Guangqi Honda and Guangqi Toyota. Among them is a project to expand capacity at Dongfeng Nissan's Huadu production site. The news seems to finally answer the popular question of which city will play host to Nissan's new domestic EV production project.

Dongfeng Nissan's Huadu site currently boasts an annual production capacity of 600,000 passenger vehicles. The GDRC project aims to boost that number by 240,000 units. To this end, it will invest 1.39 billion yuan ($221.41m) to procure and install new parts and equipment.

According to the GDRC report, work on projects for Dongfeng Nissan, Guangqi Toyota and Guangqi Honda are expected to be completed by the end of the Twelfth Five-Year Guideline, a national economic directive concluding in 2015. Upon completion, the three joint ventures are expected to see their combined annual production capacity increase by 45 percent, from 1.46 million vehicles currently to 2.12 million vehicles.
