Shipping fees erode retail spending

   Date:2012/05/15

In a bid to boost consumer spending, China is considering lowering taxes and logistics fees levied on retailers, an industry insider said yesterday.

Domestic retail sales expanded by 14.1 percent year-on-year in April, the Ministry of Finance reported on May 11, 2012.

Yet, logistics fees in the country total about 18 percent of GDP, nearly twice the figure for most developed countries. The high operating costs have inevitably inflated retail prices, which have shrunk domestic demand, experts argue.
