GM sales advance 7.5% in April on crossover, SUV demand

General Motors' China sales increased 7.5 percent year on year to 277,979 in April, thanks to robust demand for crossovers and SUVs.
 
Like other automakers, GM has hustled to expand its crossover lineup and the effort appears to be paying off.
 
Last month, combined sales of crossovers and SUVs under the Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac and Baojun brands soared 107 percent from a year earlier, the company said.
 
Buick and Baojun continued their roles as GM's powerhouse brands in China. But Wuling minibus sales suffered and Chevrolet failed to pull out of its nosedive.
 
In April, Buick sales surged 56 percent to 98,992 vehicles, led by strong demand for the Excelle GT sedan and Envision crossover.
 
Cadillac deliveries advanced 13 percent to 7,007 cars and light trucks.
 
Baojun volume jumped 56 percent to 37,915 vehicles on healthy sales of the value brand's 730 MPV and 560 crossover.
 
But Chevrolet deliveries plunged 29 percent to 35,431 vehicles. GM blamed Chevy's poor results on model changeovers.
 
Wuling sales also declined 14 percent to 98,580 vehicles as China's entry-level minibus market continued to contract.
 
GM also sells a small number of imported Opel cars. But Opel sales figures in China last month were not available.
 
In the first four months of the year, GM delivered 1.24 million vehicles in China, an increase of 1.7 percent from the same period last year.
